     Albert Mattox Memorial Shield

This Competition started in 1989 when Albert Mattox an elderly local man donated a shield to enable the younger members of Bilbrook Junior FC players to have mini-tournament. Sadly a few years ago Albert passed away and the tournament became the Albert Mattox Memorial Shield.

2005 saw the Under 6's introduced into the shield for the first time.

The tournament now caters for children from the Under 6's, Under 7's, Under 8's, Under 9's and Under 10's.

The format is to have a representative from each age section in each team. The team would be allocated a name usually themed on what major footballing event is going on at the time. i.e. if it's a World Cup year teams would be named after countries, if it was a European Championship the teams would be after European countries.

Another tradition in the Albert Mattox is that every player is a winner - the stronger teams from the first phase compete for the Shield and the remaining teams play for the Plate. Every player goes home with a medal.

Sunday 22nd May 2005 - 17th Albert Mattox Shield

The theme for this year was Midlands football teams. We had 111 children in 16 teams with seven players in each team.

This tournament had escaped bad weather for the last eight years. Unfortunately today the heavens open. Luckily it only last for 45 minutes but everyone still got very wet.

After two league phases a quarter final, a semi-final and a final the Shield produced a winner after a pentalty shoot out. The victorious team - Shrewsbury are seen below receiving their trophies from ex-Wolves and England striker Steve Bull.
